Melbourne University Ethical Anti-Psychiatry Assiociation (meow-pa)
MUEA-PA is a club founded on the basis of an anti-psychiatry perspective, in order to provide students with a more full and diverse experience with psychology at the University. Currently, there are no clubs on campus that engage with psychology outside of being a career pathway or degree, and MUEA-PA aims to fill this void.
⋆ ˚｡⋆ Mission Statement ⋆ ˚｡⋆
Psychology is a field of science that uniquely attends to the needs of the hurt and oppressed, and has become widely accessible in various forms through media and the internet. Think of the artistic exploration of clinical psychiatry and trauma through video games like psychonauts. MUEA-PA wishes to acknowledge the rich history of the discipline, the experiences of those who have been through the psychiatric system, and the future of empirical research at the hands of students as agents for change.
⋆ ˚｡⋆Our Aims ⋆ ˚｡⋆
Provide the student body with an alternative, critical voice to foster more engagement with the discipline as more than a career
Organize social activities revolving around psychology for both students of psychology, and other disciplines alike - e.g. Neo-Freudian narrative and character analysis
Foster healthy and mature discussion of topics like mental illness, stigma, and media representation within the student body through panel events and social environments
Create a discussion of psychology centered around its clinical applications, the people it can help that other disciplines can’t in the same way, and acknowledge the power research and science holds as a political entity.
Give presence to the voices of victims of the psychiatric system, people who have been helped by the psychiatric system, and other people with lived experience that aren’t in the Uni, that students and prospective researchers should still be able to hear
